Conformal coatings can be considered in many different ways. This includes the different families of materials, their individual properties and the chemistries of these coatings.

This section of the ebook aims to explain the vast range of options and considerations available and help the user gain a deeper knowledge of conformal coatings.

The different ways we can examine conformal coatings include:

These are further examined below.

Classification

There are many different types of conformal coating to choose from.

However, they can be formally grouped into two major families of liquid coatings and vapour deposition applied coatings.

Also, they can be further subdivided by many different factors including type of resin, cure mechanism and other practical properties.

Family of conformal coatings includes acrylic, urethanes, silicones, parylene and fluoropolymers

Physical Properties

Conformal coatings have varying physical properties, dependent on the type of chemistry of the coating.

These properties can be subdivided into three key areas.

These are:

These can be further subdivided into many different physical properties of the conformal coatings.

The physical properties of conformal coating can be divided into 3 sections. These 3 sections can be further subdivided into many different physical properties.
The physical properties of conformal coating can be divided into three sections: Liquid, Process and Dry State. These areas can be subdivided into many different properties.

Electrical Properties

Conformal coatings have many different electrical properties that can affect the performance of the material when protecting the circuit board.

There are several key electrical properties of conformal coatings that can be examined.

Chemistry

A conformal coating is made of two significant parts.

These are the volatile and non-volatile materials of the conformal coating.

That is the material left on the board and the part of the coating material that evaporates.

Understanding the various parts of the coating can lead to a much deeper understanding of the process.
